Notice! Many shipping companies have suspended/adjusted routes from Asia to West America, involving many Chinese ports such as Qingdao, Ningbo, Yantian, etc.

As the global economy continues to recover in the wake of the epidemic, congestion has become a major factor affecting vessel reliability and freight rates.

According to VeselnitsValue Trade and AIS data, there are currently 2.366 million TEU (INTERNATIONAL Standard Box Units) and 181.6 million DWT (load tonnage) worldwide that are "shelved" as they wait for berths.

The average waiting time for each ship outside the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach has soared to 17.7 days from 16.9 days the day before, more than double the number two months ago, according to the latest data from the Port of Los Angeles on November 16. This has undoubtedly worsened congestion on container ships outside these two ports.

It is reported that a container ship named "Hyundai Prestige" has been waiting for berthing for 49 days.

ZIM suspends Asia-US-West routes

Due to port congestion, Star Shipping-Zim has joined Wanhai in diverting ships on the Asia-U.S. West Coast route and suspending its expedited service to Los Angeles for at least seven weeks.

The last of the seven ships connecting Kaohsiung, Shanghai and Ningbo to Southern California left Kaohsiung on November 5, according to Sea intelligence, a maritime data and consultancy. The service, called the ZX3 route, will restart on December 23. Zim also has two other Asia-US routes.

A Zim spokesman said: "Given the long delays on the West Coast, particularly in Los Angeles, we have made changes to our routes, including our e-commerce routes to Los Angeles. Some ships were diverted to other routes where they needed to be. In view of the current supply chain disruption, we will continue to rerout our customers to provide the best possible service. "

Wanhai Shipping said it was moving ships from its six Asia-US routes to its internal Asian routes. Three of the ships are being redeployed to new express service routes to Ningbo, Nansha and New York.

Maersk and MSC adjust a number of Asia-US-Canada routes

It was learned that the Maersk and MSC 2M alliance recently announced the adjustment of Asia to the United States and Canada, including Qingdao, Ningbo, Yantian and other Chinese ports.

MSC said the move was necessary as the current challenging market conditions affected port activity and caused congestion throughout the supply chain.

As a result, the world's largest container federation will modify the following services to provide better schedule reliability:

Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Announces Extension of Container Detention Charges

To encourage importers and consignees to pick up boxes from shipping terminals as quickly as possible to give terminal operators more flexibility in receiving empty containers, ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach are implementing plans to impose container detention fees.

As a result of progress in clearing containers at sea terminals for more than nine days, the ports agreed to postpone the charge by one week. The new charges, originally scheduled to take effect on 15 November, have now been postponed until 22 November.

The port said railroad and truck drivers had made significant progress in unloading imported containers from terminals at ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach, prompting managers to delay the start of the collection of retention charges for overdue containers.

Since the plan was announced on October 25th, the number of containers stranded for long periods of time has fallen by 26%.
